launching Statement: My Safe Work is a Priority
Today, we are launching our campaign “My Safe Work is a Priority”, in which we will discuss how to ensure a safe work environment in Egypt for workers, with a main focus on women’s safety and protection as they are the most vulnerable to various forms of harassment and violations at their workplaces due of their gender. The violations against female workers vary to include violating their rights as workers, such as arbitrary dismissal, unequal wage compared to men doing the same job, denial of leaves, and failure to adhere to the legal working hours. Other times, it could be violations of their fundamental human rights, exposing them to various forms of sexual, physical, and psychological violence.
During our campaign, we will discuss the concepts of the safe work environment, shedding light on the International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention No. c190 regarding the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work, and the importance of Egypt ratifying this convention very soon.
We have decided to start our campaign today, April 28th, on World Day for Safety and Health at Work, to emphasize the safety of workers from all forms of violence and harm within the work environment as part of the concept of occupational safety and health. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has been concerned with several agreements regarding occupational safety and health, including the latest procedural agreement No. 191, which addresses the inclusion of a safe and healthy work environment within the fundamental principles and rights at work adopted by the ILO.
Our campaign will run for 4 days until May 1st, coinciding with Labor Day, during which we will discuss the measures that should be taken by the Egyptian government to ensure a safe working environment for male and female workers. These measures represent the essence of Convention No. C190 of the International Labor Organization as well as the implementation and activation of various fundamental human rights guaranteed in Human Rights Law and the Egyptian Constitution.
